S.S.S. Study Letters to the churches Lesson 5

S.S.S. Study The 7 Churches of Revelation
Family School at Faith Baptist Church
Week 5: The church at Thyatira

Visitors Guide: One of the smaller cities yet the longest letter, this city was home to many skilled trade Guilds which had their own gods and festivals. In order to find work you had to belong to a guild but to belong to a guild you had to take part in wicked traditions and practices which included eating things offered to idols and fornication. The dilemma was working among the world without being part of it.

Revelation 2:18-29

Vs 18 Description of Christ
Vs 19 Commendations
Works- (1st) When someone is saved we have an immediate gratitude to God for our salvation and are eager to work for God even if we aren't sure where to start.
Charity- 1st Corinthians 13
Service- Galatians 5:13, Romans 12:10-13
Faith- Ephesians 2:8, faith is the foundation for salvation Hebrews 11:6
Patience- James 1:3-4, patience often produces contentment
Works-  (2nd) James 2:18 Over time we begin to work for God with steady hands, Unfortunately many Christians let the fire of the first works fail and never mature in their walk with God, here works is mentioned a second time, this church was steadily working for God with patience, by faith, serving each other through charity.
Vs 20 Rebuke
Woman teaching false doctrine, 1st Timothy 2:12, God has clearly established that the husband is the head of the wife (Ephesians 5:23) any woman teaching men in Gods church directly contradicts Gods word.
Fornication, 1st Corinthians 7:1
Idolatry, 1st Corinthians 10:14, what is idolatry? Colossians 3:5-6
Vs 21 God always gives us the option to repent first, but often it is refused.
Vs 22 Punishment "I will" Gods wrath and judgement is just, and right.
Vs 23 "I am" Psalm 139:23-24, God already knows our thoughts and intentions so why not just confess them to Him first hand, We can fool other men with our actions but God sees our intentions and those matter to Him a great deal, Titus 1:10-13
Vs 24 Promise to those who have not been deceived. Notice God does not promise to take away our burdens today's health and wealth preachers directly contradict Gods word when they promise health and wealth in exchange for "faith" and $$$.
Vs 25 Instructions to those who have not been deceived, 1st Thessalonians 5:21, 2nd Timothy 1:13.
Vs 26-28 Promise to the overcomers, Jesus Christ is our reward!

Revelation 22:16 "I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star."

The gift of Christ John 10:14-18

Vs 29 Again we see that these letters are for all people to learn by.

Homework: Read Revelation chapter 3 at least three times this week, write at least one missionary a thank you letter.
